Follow Up Without Fumbling

What to do right after a great conversation.

You just had a great exchange at a conference or demo day — ideas were flying, cards exchanged, maybe even a “Let’s talk more.” Fast forward 48 hours, and you’re staring at your inbox wondering what exactly you talked about… or what you were supposed to do next.

The follow-up is where relationships are built. But only if you remember who, what, and why.

Tip 1: Text Yourself

Right after the convo — even in the hallway — open your notes app or text your own number. Jot down:

  • Name

  • What you talked about

  • Any next steps you promised (or hoped for)

A few keywords now can save an awkward “great to meet you… remind me what we talked about?” later.

Tip 2: Set the Tone — and the Topic

When you follow up, it’s not just a polite wave. It’s a chance to move the conversation forward. It’s okay — and encouraged — to say what you want to talk about.

Example:

“Great chatting at [event]. I really appreciated your insight on [X]. I’d love to follow up on [Y] — are you open to a quick call next week?”

You’re not being pushy — you’re being clear.

Tip 3: Be Specific

People meet a lot of faces. Remind them how you connected, and why it mattered. The more context you give, the easier it is for them to say yes.

The follow-up isn’t the afterthought. It’s the first real move.
